What a Fractional CRO Costs in India and the US (2026)
The range is large: roughly ₹1.5 lakh a month at the early-stage India end to ₹10 lakh and above for engagements scoped to US-market revenue. Where you land depends on three things: days per week, company stage, and how much of the revenue number the CRO owns. A fractional seat runs a fraction of a full-time executive’s loaded cost, with no recruiting delay.

How much does a fractional CRO cost in the US?
US fractional CROs price as flat monthly retainers tied to an agreed number of days per week. Published benchmarks exist — Go Fractional’s rates page and Pavilion’s fractional pricing guide are the most cited — and they agree on the shape: light advisory sits at the floor, a near-interim seat at the ceiling, and the retainer scales with days per week and with how much of the number the CRO owns. Across the whole range, a fractional seat costs a fraction of what the equivalent full-time executive would, fully loaded.
How much does a fractional CRO cost in India?
The Indian market is younger and prices below the US for comparable scope, because the full-time executive salaries it substitutes for are lower. Sales Fundas’ India pricing guide publishes the most-quoted Indian benchmarks. Hybrid structures — a cash retainer plus a performance-linked component — are more common in India than in the US.
Two line items are fixed regardless of the fee. GST at 18% applies on top of the professional fee when the engagement is billed in India. And tools and data are typically the client’s cost — CRM, enrichment and outbound software are billed separately from the retainer.
The gap between Indian-market and US-market retainers for the same work is the arbitrage case for Indian-founded teams selling globally — covered in detail on the fractional CRO India page and the India-to-US page.
What moves the fee up or down?
| Driver | Pushes the fee up | Pushes the fee down |
|---|---|---|
| Days per week | A near-interim seat: multiple days a week inside the company, running deal reviews and hiring | A few advisory hours a month, reviewing rather than running |
| Stage and ARR | Post-Series A, real ARR at stake, board reporting and a forecast to defend | Pre-seed or seed, founder still closing every deal |
| Scope of ownership | Owning the revenue number, the forecast and the leadership hires | Advising on plans someone else executes |
| Team size | Managing reps across functions, with comp design and capacity planning | Coaching a founder and a first account executive |
| Geography mix | Multi-region motion: US-hours coverage, regional pods, cross-timezone handoffs | A single domestic market |
A performance or equity component, where both sides agree to one, typically lowers the cash retainer in exchange.
How does this compare to a full-time CRO?
A full-time CRO hire means months of executive search before anyone starts, then quarters of ramp before output. The package is salary plus bonus plus equity plus benefits — the loaded cost is far above the base — and it comes with severance exposure if the hire misses. The miss is common: Jason Lemkin’s long-cited estimate is that most first-time VPs of Sales don’t last a year in the seat (OpenView; restated on SaaStr), and a mis-hire costs the package plus the quarters of pipeline it burned.
A fractional CRO starts in weeks, not months, at a fraction of the loaded full-time cost, and the engagement is designed to end: the system gets built, your full-time leader gets hired and onboarded, and the handover is part of the scope rather than a crisis. The full trade-off between roles is on the advisor vs consultant vs fractional CRO page.
How do fractional CROs structure fees?
- Monthly retainer. The default: a flat fee for an agreed number of days per week. Pavilion’s warning is to write the day count down — an unwritten retainer becomes fiction within two months.
- Hybrid. A cash base plus a kicker tied to an outcome the operator actually controls — Pavilion’s control test. Common in India per Sales Fundas; pure commission deals are something senior operators increasingly refuse, because product and delivery sit outside their control.
- Fixed project. Defined deliverables, fixed price, fixed end date — consulting rather than a seat. Right when the build is bounded and your team will run what gets built.
- Hourly. Pavilion advises operators to refuse hourly pricing, because the hour turns an executive into a contractor. Read an hourly quote accordingly: you may be buying tasks, not ownership.
- The diagnostic. Pavilion’s rule is to charge for it. A free audit is a sales call; a paid one comes with findings someone stands behind.
How does ToplineCRO price?
I don’t publish a rate card, because the fee follows the scope and we set the scope together. What I can tell you is how my engagements are structured.
Fractional CRO seats are for Series A to C companies: 2 to 2.5 days a week, cash retainer, 6-month minimum, with an optional performance or equity component on top of the base. Advisor roles for earlier-stage teams can be equity-compensated, with standard two-year vesting. Consulting is a defined build at a fixed scope. Every engagement starts with a diagnostic — two to three weeks, a scored audit, and a 90-day roadmap — and I take three or four clients at a time, never more.
The exact fee is discussed on the discovery call, once we both know the scope. Fifteen minutes, and it ends with an honest answer, including “you don’t need me yet.”
Frequently asked questions
How much does a fractional CRO cost per month?
The range is large — roughly ₹1.5 lakh a month at the early-stage India end to ₹10 lakh and above for engagements scoped to US-market revenue. The fee is set by days per week, company stage, and how much of the revenue number the CRO owns, and it is usually structured as a flat monthly retainer. Published benchmarks exist — Pavilion and Go Fractional for the US, Sales Fundas for India. The fastest way to a real number for your company is a scoped conversation, which is what the discovery call is for.
How much does a fractional CRO cost in India?
Less than in the US for comparable scope — the Indian fractional market is younger and the full-time executive salaries it substitutes for are lower. Sales Fundas publishes the most-quoted India benchmarks. Hybrid structures — a cash retainer plus a performance-linked component — are common. Two line items are fixed: GST at 18% applies on top of the professional fee, and software and data tools are typically the client’s cost, billed separately.
Is a fractional CRO cheaper than a VP of Sales?
Usually, yes. A full-time hire means months of search, a loaded package of salary, bonus, equity and benefits, and quarters of ramp before output. A fractional CRO starts in weeks, costs a fraction of that loaded package, and the engagement ends with a handover to your full-time leader rather than a severance conversation. The mis-hire risk is the hidden cost on the full-time side: most first-time VPs of Sales don’t last long in the seat.
Do fractional CROs take equity?
Sometimes, but almost always on top of a cash base, not instead of it. Pavilion’s guidance: equity is a bonus on top of cash, because most early companies never exit. At ToplineCRO, advisor roles can be equity-compensated with standard two-year vesting; consulting and fractional CRO work is a cash base with an optional performance or equity component.
Is GST charged on fractional CRO fees in India?
Yes. GST at 18% is charged on top of the professional fee for fractional CRO and fractional sales leadership services billed in India. Software and data tools are typically the client’s cost, billed separately from the retainer.
What minimum commitment is typical?
Minimums measured in months, not weeks. A revenue system takes at least two quarters to build and prove, so serious fractional CROs decline month-to-month trials. My own fractional engagements run 2–2.5 days a week with a 6-month minimum.
